Hollywood, CA -- Top Rank Promotions held the only “media day” for Manny Pacquiao just minutes ago at the Wildcard Gym in this City.
Pacquiao as everyone knows by now will defend his WBC Welterweight title against Joshua Clottey of Ghana at the giant Cowboy Stadium at Arlington, Texas on March 13th.
Needless to say, the top media people were there to add to the glitter for the day headed by Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times and sportscaster Jim Hill of the local Channel 2 and 9 CBS affiliate. The local Filipino channel was represented as well by the lovely Jannelle So of TV 18 Kababayan, LA. Joseph Pimentel of the Asian Journal was there as well. Oh yes, the “White Gorilla” and Jeng Gacal’s best friend, Michael Marley of the Examiner was there too. But he gently refused our invitation to have a round of “ballot” and beer with this writer.
Also spotted with their cameras and recording equipments were top Filipino journalists, Roy Luarca of the Philippine Inquirer and Abac Cordero of the Philippine Star and Chino Trinidad of the GMA.
What was surprising however, was there were less media people in this event compared to those that came to rub elbows and ask questions when Pacquiao fought Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and Oscar de la Hoya.
It could not be due to weather as it was a typical lovely day in LA today with temperatures hovering 70 degrees.
Perhaps people just had other things to do just like PhilBoxing’s Granville Ampong who only stayed for a few minutes so he can take care of family matters and doctor/photographer Manny Ortega who had patients to see.
Top Rank people were there in force headed by the man himself, Bob Arum.
Pacquiao did interviews inside the locker room for the “big guns” in the sports news business. Thereafter, he came up the ring and under the direction of media specialist Fred Sturnburg, Pacquiao went around the ring and did short interviews with the rest of the media people that crowded the ring while the TV crew did their bit and the photographers blasted away with their digital cameras.
After the press con Pacquiao will proceed to the ABC Channel 7 Theater to do a live show once again with the ever popular talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel.
