The crazy back-and-forth about bringing a boxing match to Cowboys Stadium is finally over. A fight is coming to Arlington, but it doesn't have as much star power as originally expected.
Manny Pacquiao will face Joshua Clottey instead of Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13. Jerry Jones had reportedly offered $25 million to host a Pacquiao-Mayweather Jr. fight and was competing with Las Vegas and Los Angeles, among others. The stadium is expected to accommodate a crowd of about 40,000 for its first fight, which likely means closing off the upper deck with curtains.
Todd Archer's story has more details about the fight. For those who haven't been following, Cowboys Stadium was named a contender for the fight a month ago. Since then, one promoter seemed to be confused about whether the stadium was domed; there was a controversy about drug testing; and one promoter threatened to sue another. Apparently, this isn't particularly unusual behavior in the boxing world.
In a Yahoo! Sports story about the fight, it looked like there was an error. I couldn't tell whether it was the writer or Jerry Jones. Check it out after the jump.
"This is a very significant fight and I'm truly ecstatic," Jones told Yahoo! Sports by telephone on Sunday. "From the time we began work on the stadium, I envisioned bringing boxing here. We have a very large Hispanic fan base surrounding us and they're very loyal boxing fans. I think they'll be thrilled with this event."
Jones said he considered naming the stadium Vaqueros de Cowboys, which is Spanish for Dallas Cowboys, in homage to the many Hispanics in the area.
As a colleague on our photo desk pointed out, Vaqueros de Cowboys would make it the Cowboys Cowboys, not the Dallas Cowboys. Are we wrong? Is there some linguistic subtly I'm missing?
Another site has a similar quote from Jones but with a less nonsensical stadium name.
