Pacquiao: I'm satisfied without Mayweather bout on resume
Boxing Examiner | Michael Marley
Manny Pacquiao, speaking on an international media conference call Friday, made it clear that he will not feel incomplete if his boxing career ends without a fight against Floyd Mayweather.
"I am OK," Pacman said on a publicity call he shared along with promoter Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach. "I don't need him."
"Actually, I don't need Mayweather because what I have achieved right now in boxing is something that the people know."
Pacquiao said, as he has in the past, that he will not engage in swapping insults with the American superstar.
"We cannot change him. That is his style. I just pray to God and do the hard work. But it is his style to do a lot of trash talk and I don't think that Mayweather gives a good example in that."
Megamanny, who said he will concentrate fully on his Sarangani Congressional campaign fully from March 26 through Election Day on May 10. said that he was "disappointed" when fight negotiations with the Mayweather camp fell through in January.
"I think he was not ready to fight me," Pacquiao said. "I think his accusations about me using drugs was an excuse to just cancel our fight. I felt bad, I was disappointed.
"I am disappointed but I am not angry to him. That is his style and we cannot change that."
Pacquiao was asked if he might retire from the ring anytime soon.
"We will see but I can't say this (Joshua Clottey) is my last bout. It's hard to say that I will retire but right now this is my last bout before the election and I am excited about that."
One journalist asked how an opponent might defeat the Pinoy Idol.
"With a .45," Roach cracked.
Pacquiao had a snappy answer as well.
"When I get old," Pacquiao said.
Pacman said he doesn't view Clottey as an easy foe but said he felt strong after going 11 hard rounds in sparring at the Wild Card Gym on Thursday. (Roach said the fighter would taper off on the sparring after Friday's work at the gym in Hollywood.)
"I am good," Pacquiao said. "Everything is good. Joshua Clottey is bigger than me, taller than me and then we can't understimate him because he is a former world champion."
Roach opined that the aggressive styles may make for a real shootout in the NFL Cowboys glittering new stadium in Arlington.
"It's a compelling fight, a Fight of the Year type fight, I think," Roach said. "We will leave for Dallas on March 8. I think Manny's speed and combinations will be the difference. Do I think he will be the frist guy to stop Clottey? Yes, I do."
